Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) is returning to the director’s chair for the series finale of Queen Sugar, bringing back one of the show’s original voices. Based on a book by Natalie Baszile, the show aired on OWN in 2016. Oprah Winfrey serves as an executive producer on the series created by Ava DuVernay. Over the years, the director has written various episodes of Queen Sugar. The seventh and final season of the project will be broadcast later this year. First-time female directors have been given the opportunity to showcase their work on OWN’s series, with each episode overseen by a female director.
A new season’s first episode is being directed by current showrunner Shaz Bennett. Kat Candler, Stacey Muhammad, and Patricia Cardoso will also serve as directors for the remaining two episodes. In recent years, DuVernay has mostly worked in television. In works like When They See Us and Colin in Black and White, her focus has been on social justice issues. Naomi, the recently cancelled CW series about a comic book lover who investigates a strange incident in her hometown, was co-created by her and Jill Blankenship. HBO Max has debuted DMZ, with the first episode helmed by Ava DuVernay.
As a mother seeking her missing kid in the present political climate, Rosario Dawson plays the role of a physician. When Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), and Ralph (Kofi Siriboe) lose their father, they take over the family sugarcane farm in rural Louisiana, which they have been running since. Omar Dorsey, Timothy Kyle Durrett, Nicholas L. Ashe and Greg Vaughan are some of the other cast members. Glynn Turman, True O’Brien, and Reagan Gomez-Preston have all appeared as guest stars.
Reviews have lauded Queen Sugar’s portrayal of the Black experience in addition to its depiction of both class and race. As of right now, it’s the longest-running original series on OWN. Additionally, Xosha Roquemore, Alano Miller, and Cicely Tyson may be seen in the romance anthology series Cherish the Day on the network. The Kings of Napa, a soap opera that started in January and recently concluded its first season, is also available.
The seventh season of Queen Sugar will air on OWN this year.
