If the story of renowned climber Alex Honnold told in Free Solo had your heart racing, Lionsgate Films’ new teaser for their next thriller, Fall, should do the same. The Scott Mann-directed picture will test the nerves of both the protagonists and the audience members alike. Mann is known for his talents in thrillers like Heist and The Tournament, and if he can maintain the momentum generated in Fall’s trailer, the picture has the potential to fatigue audiences. To avoid giving away too many of the film’s exciting sequences, the trailer shows us a climbing pair making their way up a slippery rock wall. Tragedy strikes when the lover (Mason Gooding) falls to his death while climbing on a bright sunny day. Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) takes a long break from climbing in the wake of the death of her closest friend and sweetheart. While Becky is apprehensive about the 2,000-foot climb, her best friend Hunter (Virginia Gardner) pushes her to do it nonetheless.
When your partner fell to his death and you were out of climbing form for a year, it’s an unusual approach to overcome your fear of heights, but Becky, do what makes you happy! Ladders start to tumble off the sides as our heroes make their way up the crumbling metal structure that serves as their fortification. Although they’ve made it to the top, the girls have no cell phone reception, water or a route down. Fortunately (or unluckily) the rest of the trailer depicts them frantically trying to get to their stuff, hoping that they would be saved. As a gentle reminder, always notify someone where you’re going if you’re participating in any outside activity!
Many story details are disclosed in the trailer, and while there will no doubt be plenty of heart-pounding moments, it feels as if the key ones have been told ahead of time. It also appears that most of the film will take place on top of the radio tower, which may either make or destroy the picture. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Becky’s father, will also be a part of the film’s cast. Morgan and Mann had previously worked together on the film Heist, which boasted an impressive cast that included Robert De Niro, Dave Bautista, and Kate Bosworth.
We’ll have to wait and see if Fall can live up to the thrilling start it’s giving us, but because Mann is directing and co-writing the picture with Jonathan Frank, we’re prepared to put our faith in it. On August 12, the film Fall will be released in theatres.
