Iyanu: Child of Wonder, a visual novel by Nigerian authors Roye Okupe and Godwin Akpan, is to be adapted for television by HBO Max, Cartoon Network, and Lion Forge Animation. When it comes to the animated superhero series, there will be a heavy focus on Nigerian culture and myths. To save her people from an ancient curse that threatens to wipe out the whole human race, a young girl must investigate the truth behind the talents she’s recently gained. The narrative takes place in a magical version of Yorubaland, and the Yoruba people of Nigeria play a large role in the plot.
In an episode of Iyanu, in which Okupe serves as the show’s executive producer and writer and director for several episodes, says, “I wanted to merge everything I love about the fantasy genre with the grandeur and wonder that is ancient West Africa,” which is why “Iyanu” was created. She spends her days learning about the history and traditions of her people while wishing she could lead a more regular life. Iyanu, an orphan, is the protagonist of the series.
However, one day, she unwittingly activates her supernatural talents while responding to a threat. Two other teens, Iyanu and her newfound superpowers set out on a trip to uncover the truth about the evil hiding around them. David Steward II, the founder of Lion Forge Animation, said:
Authenticity is really important to us, and the Iyanu tale fits right in with our goal of creating and distributing inclusive content for a worldwide audience. Iyanu’s richness and complexity allow us to explore and construct a magnificent cosmos on screen with the help of some of the industry’s most renowned partners.
Brandon Easton and Okupe are the co-heads of the writers’ room. Supervisory director Saxton Moore, a two-time Emmy winner, is on board. Lion Forge Animation’s Steward II and Matt Heath, Impact X Capital’s Erica Dupuis, Forefront Media Group’s Ryan Haidarian, Doug Schwalbe, and Carl Reed serve as executive producers.
Amy Friedman, Warner Bros.’ head of kids and family programming, had this to say:
With a strong, African female protagonist at the heart of the story, Iyanu: Child of Wonder has it all — expansive world-building, realistic characters, and a top-notch creative team of writers and producers. Despite being aimed at children, the series will appeal to anybody who likes tales of mystery, magic, mythology, and tradition. The opportunity to host Iyanu and work with this group is one that we take great pride in. The project is still under wraps, but we’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
