The Fall of the House of Usher, directed by Mike Flanagan, Production Completed; Release Date, Cast, and Plot

In an early July 9 announcement, filmmaker Mike Flanagan revealed that production has concluded on his highly anticipated Netflix movie, The Fall of the House of Usher. Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures will produce their sixth horror miniseries based on gothic literature that will be streamed on Netflix. Kate Siegel’s co-star, Rahul Kohli, tweeted a snapshot of an early wrap present from the next series on Instagram in June, which confirmed that production was almost completed.

Once again, House of Usher has entered post-production after a little over six months. On July 9, Flanagan announced on Twitter that he and the crew of their upcoming Netflix miniseries had just finished filming. According to Flanagan, the completion of production on The Fall of the House of Usher represents the end of an era for him and given that he’s been filming masterpiece after masterpiece in Vancouver, Canada, that’s saying a lot. That doesn’t mean it’s over for Intrepid Pictures and Vancouver, but a lot has happened since the commencement of production on The Haunting of Bly Manor in 2019 when Intrepid initially began filming.

According to Flanagan’s post, “We just finished filming THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, which means a major chapter in my life has come to an end. Since BLY MANOR in 2019, I’ve spent nearly all of my waking hours in Vancouver. We produced four seasons in three years, pausing only for the COVID lockdown in early 2020 to take a short vacation… Having the opportunity to collaborate with some of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with over the course of THIRTY-FOUR EPISODES of television has been one of the most gratifying and challenging experiences of my life.”

Our understanding is that Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, initially published in 1839 and subsequently included in an anthology of stories titled Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, as well as other short stories by Poe, would serve as the basis for The Fall of the House of Usher. With Bruce Greenwood as Roderick Usher and Mary McDonnell as his twin sister Madeleine, Flanagan’s rendition of Usher’s story will follow his boyhood buddy and invited visitor as the host steadily discloses more about his strange house and twin sister (Battlestar Galactica). For those who haven’t seen any of Flanagan’s previous work, he’s turned a number of works of gothic literature into ten-episode miniseries.

Beginning in 2018 with The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson’s reimagined novel of the same name, the content is succinct with a focus on character development and stunning graphics that stunned viewers. After straying from his regular formula with an original story in 2021, the religious horror film Midnight Mass became an instant hit with Netflix viewers. Flanagan, like horror anthology fan Ryan Murphy, employs recurrent actors, such as his wife, actress Siegel, in many of his projects. The Midnight Club, Flanagan’s other novel adaptation, will debut on Netflix on October 7 and is the next Flanagan fix after House of Usher. With a stellar ensemble including Mark Hamill, Carla Gugino, Willa Fitzgerald, T’Nia Miller… and more, The Fall of the House of Usher is a must-see. Fans of Robert Longstreet, Samantha Sloyan, Crystal Balint, Henry Thomas, Michael Trucco, Sauriyan Sapkota, and Zach Gilford will be ecstatic to see them return to Midnight Mass.

It’s just a matter of time until we learn when Netflix will begin streaming The Fall of the House of Usher. You can see Flanagan’s original tweet, as well as the show’s official logline and below: We concluded production on THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER only a few minutes ago, bringing an end to a significant phase in my life. Since BLY MANOR in 2019, I’ve been living and working in Vancouver virtually constantly. Just a few months before the COVID shutdown in early 2020, we produced four series in three years.

A number of Edgar Allan Poe stories serve as inspiration for the show, which deals with lunacy, family, loneliness, and metaphysical identities. When a guy goes to see his boyhood buddy Roderick Usher, he tells the story of how his family’s house falls apart. As Usher slowly reveals, his twin sister, Madeline, has been buried in the family vault, but she isn’t quite dead. Visitors flee as the home breaks in two and falls into a lake as she emerges in her blood-stained shroud.
