The 4K Ultra HD restoration of the director’s cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which premiered on Paramount+ earlier this year, is now available on disc. Remastered versions of the first six Star Trek films, one of which includes the original crew, will also be available in three bundles, one of which includes all six films. In 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was launched in cinemas, directed by Robert Wise and written by Harold Livingston. Films such as Star Trek: The Motion Picture made it possible for the crew of the USS Enterprise to keep travelling where no man had gone for many years after the success of the television series. Remastered sound and visuals were added to this DVD version of the film produced in 2001 by Wise. As a result of the restoration, three people who had previously worked with director Robert Wise took on the task.
Along with the restored version of the film, Paramount Home Entertainment has included a Blu-ray disc loaded with previously unreleased and brand-new extra features. The 4K Ultra HD version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture will be included in two additional bundles in addition to the one that currently has everything a Trekkie could ask for. The first collector’s collection, The Complete Adventure, includes not just the new director’s cut, but also the theatrical cut and a unique extended cut, all in 4K Ultra HD, all on a single disc. Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection includes all six original crew films in 4K Ultra HD. There will be a 4K Ultra HD release of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Fein referred to the 4K Ultra HD disc versions of Star Trek: The Motion Picture when discussing the discs. As a result of the efforts of all those involved, the Director’s Edition in 4K Ultra HD provides an experience that is significantly more intimate, engaging, and powerful. We knew that many individuals who saw the film for the first time in the ‘Special Longer Version,’ but had not seen it in its entirety, would be disappointed when we created The Complete Adventure. That it is now accessible in widescreen 4k Ultra HD for the first time makes me happy. To finally release Robert Wise’s official Director’s Edition for fans to watch at home after so many years is a very fulfilling experience.” On September 6, Star Trek: The Motion Picture 4K Ultra HD will be available in all formats.
