La Favorite, a film that marks Johnny Depp’s comeback to feature films following his traumatic defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard, has been bought by Netflix, according to a Bloomberg report. According to Depp’s apparent promise to avoid Hollywood studios, the project will be filmed in France. It’s been 15 months since the movie was released in theatres, and Netflix has reportedly licenced the streaming rights to it. However, the agreement does not extend the film’s international distribution rights. The acquisition of the film’s rights by Netflix will assist in funding the project.
Netflix, on the other hand, will not be directly engaged in the film’s development. Prince Depp will be playing King Louis XV, the ancestor of Louis XVI, who would go on to be assassinated during the French Revolution. Mawenn Le Besco will direct La Favorite, which is scheduled for release in French theatres in 2023. As a result of his ex-wife Amber Heard’s charges of domestic abuse, Johnny Depp has frequently expressed feeling rejected by Hollywood. Depp’s French heritage will be on full display in a Favorite, which is totally in French.
Depp was born in Kentucky, although Johnny and his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, a French singer, model, and actor, resided in France for many years. Two children were born to the couple prior to their separation. Versailles, the chateau outside of Paris where Louis XV held court, will serve as the backdrop for La Favorite’s filming. Three months of filming will be required to complete the project. La Favorite’s contract with Netflix follows Netflix’s recent accord with the French film guilds. Some of the money Netflix and other streaming services make will be expected to go toward supporting the creation of locally produced films.
A Bloomberg article states that Netflix will invest 40 million Euros in French film projects throughout the period of 2022, and Depp’s new movie is one of their first picks for funding, which is a good indication for the actor. The film’s director, Le Besco, will also portray Louis’ legendary mistress, Madame du Barry. If you’ve seen Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, you may recognise Asia Argento’s, Madame du Barry. La Favorite has yet to be given a debut date, although it is scheduled for 2023.
