The Last Movie Stars has a new trailer, thanks to HBO Max. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, two of Hollywood’s biggest names, will be the focus of a new docuseries. Even though they became household names, the Hollywood couple maintained a low-key existence. The six-part series will begin airing at the end of the month. The Last Movie Stars’ teaser demonstrates that the undertaking is nothing short of miraculous: Nearing the end of his life, Newman was conducting more than 100 interviews to write a tell-all book. Newman, on the other hand, had a change of heart and lit the recordings on fire.
His children got access to the transcripts, so they reached out to series director Ethan Hawke so that he could hear a previously unheard narrative. Ethan Hawke chose to retell some of Newman’s infamous interviews by inviting some of his favourite actors to re-create what the late actor said on the missing tapes. George Clooney and Laura Linney will read for Newman and Woodward, respectively, during the event.
Docuseries director Sam Rockwell, however, also enlisted the help of actors Melanie Griffith, Billy Crudup and Sally Field as well as actors Steve Zahn and LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Oscar Isaac. Even Martin Scorsese, who directed The Wolf of Wall Street, had a hand in putting this picture together: he was named executive producer. As “the Grabber” in The Black Phone, Hawke recently made the news. When it comes to filmmaking, the actor has tried his hand at it a few times, most recently with the biography Blaze in 2018.
In 2014, Hawke directed Seymour: An Introduction, a documentary on pianist and composer Seymour Bernstein, one of the most important figures of our time. The Last Movie Stars begins on HBO Max on July 21.
