By modifying its methodology for Season 2, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal hopes to keep redefining animation. Genndy Tartakovsky, the show’s creator and director, told Entertainment Weekly that the forthcoming season of Primal would build on the prehistorical environment of the series by introducing characters from various tribes. A T-Rex named Fang and a caveman named Spear were the focus of the first season of the docuseries Primal. In order to survive, the two of them had to battle their way across a perilous prehistoric landscape.
Despite the season’s focus on Spear and Fang’s friendship, each episode has its own unique set of obstacles for the two to conquer. Season 2 will see a shift in this, as the advent of a human from a different culture, Mira, in the Season 1 finale will alter the very fabric of the Primal world. According to Tartakovsky: “The appearance of Mira in the series sheds light on the possibility that there is a more evolved civilisation elsewhere in the universe. The moment you enter the realm of ancient civilizations, your mind immediately wanders to films like “Pharaohs,” “Stargate,” and “10,000 BC,” among many others. I came to the realisation that everything we were discussing was overused and cliched. As a result, we took a fresh approach after dismantling everything and starting from scratch.
Everything from [episode] 11 to 20 is one tale, therefore you’ll never get bored. Because of this, it’s quite different from Season 1.” Spear and Fang’s unique relationship will continue to be explored even though Season 2 of Primal will focus on a single tale and include many more humans. With the series’ ultraviolence as one of its most important selling features, Tartakovsky knows that what keeps viewers coming back is the series’ complicated relationships, even without utilising communication as a tool.
Season 2 will continue similar themes, as Tartakovsky explains. According to him:
“Season 2 is much more difficult to handle on a personal level. As the season progresses, the action takes on a magnitude we haven’t experienced before. It’s shocking in a good way. People will either love or loathe me for a major surprise, but as a storyteller, I’m having fun with it. It has a heavy metal flavour to it. Still pulpy, but the central storyline between Fang and Spear is completely out of control. The finest surprise of the first season was that one. It wasn’t the violence that people noticed; it was their bond. That’s what you’re most enthusiastic about as a filmmaker and storyteller.”
The first episode of Season 2 of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal will be broadcast on Adult Swim at midnight on July 21 before it is available to stream on HBO Max the following day.
