After the move of Netflix’s original Marvel series to Disney+ and Charlie Cox’s brief appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, all doubts about Matt Murdock returning to the MCU have been thrown out the window. Alaqua Cox, the adopted daughter of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) and ally of Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), will feature as the titular Deaf superheroine in Disney+’s new series Echo, which has been confirmed to bring back both Vincent D’Onofrio and Alaqua Cox from Daredevil. It was back in December when Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez made her debut appearance in the Disney+ MCU canon when D’Onofrio starred in Hawkeye.
However, the MCU has shown time and time again that even when a character is shot to death in the last minutes of an episode, it’s unlikely that they’ve truly died. This is especially true when it comes to characters like Kingpin, who started off as an ally of his. As far as we know, D’Onofrio is going to be one of the primary villains in Echo. (I mean, even if my adopted child shot me, I’d be furious.) In contrast, Echo is Charlie Cox’s first true introduction to the MCU as it exists now, after a brief cameo appearance in No Way Home that didn’t do much more than save Peter Parker from a prison term.
On-screen appearances of Matt Murdock as Matt Murdock will be Cox’s first since the termination of Daredevil; however, the events of the Netflix-turned-Disney+ series have yet to be verified as canonical. Because Matt Murdock wouldn’t be the same without Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, we’re crossing our fingers they are. Disney+ subscribers can expect Echo to launch in 2023 after filming got underway in May.
Additionally, the series is expected to be a milestone for Native representation in the MCU with Alaqua Cox and the two Daredevil alums Devery Jacobs and Graham Greene as well as Chaske Spencer and Tantoo Cardinal as well as Zahn McClarnon. Though details of the series’ plot are being kept under wraps, it is anticipated to draw influence from many of Echo’s most memorable books, in which she teams up with Daredevil, a superhero who is also crippled.
The release date for Echo has yet to be disclosed.
