Kate Bush’s eerie, energising single “Running Up That Hill” became a worldwide sensation, just 37 years after its debut, thanks to its excellent placement in episode 4 of Stranger Things Season 4. The first track of Bush’s masterpiece Hounds of Love, long regarded as a classic, is currently climbing the charts, earning the singer millions, and shattering records. In fact, Spotify has even created customised Upside Down Playlists to assist you select your own favourite song to fight off Vecna. Bush is taken aback, but appreciative all the same.
The grandiose, tragic appearance in the season finale of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” proves again how the perfect song at the right time may affect viewers and record sales, albeit it is doubtful. If you expect fresh hits from Stranger Things in Season 5, you’ll be disappointed. “Running Up That Hill” creators Matt and Ross Duffer told Collider’s Steve Weintraub that they had no idea how popular the show would be, and they don’t plan on repeating that success. “The ‘Running up that Hill,’ the Kate Bush stuff, [is] so weird,” remarked Matt Duffer. “I’m not on TikTok, but others say, “Oh, it’s everywhere on TikTok!” Even if I have no idea what that implies, it’s still weird how things like that happen.”
There is no one who cares about the fact that an English art-rock gem got her first number one single owing to a throwback horror series that is only available on technology that is only half as old as her career. It’s still a lucky break in the age of the internet that any musician can appreciate. Musicians, on the other hand, should not hold their breath waiting for the Duffers and their hordes of Netflix followers. If this all occurs again, it will be just as strange and unplanned as the prior time.
“This may happen with another band, but Matt was unsure whether it would. It’s not the kind of thing you’ll try to repeat in Season 5.” He adds, “” “Season 5’s first question is, ‘What song are you going to sing in Season 5?’ I get that question all the time. I’m thinking, “We’ll never do it again.” Because if we don’t, it’ll never work.” It’s a good bet. It’s famously difficult to capture lightning, and sadly, there is only one Kate Bush in the world. Netflix is currently airing Season 4 of Stranger Things.
