The renowned producer and distributor GKIDS, which has its headquarters in New York City, recently made the announcement that the upcoming anime film Goodbye, Don Glees! would be released in cinemas all across the country in September. In addition, GKIDS has formed a partnership with Fathom Events to organise fan preview events before the film is released in theatres. Goodbye, Don Glees! is the 1st original feature film written and directed by Atsuko Ishizuka, and it was produced by Studio Madhouse, which is responsible for the creation of iconic anime titles such as Death Note and Black Lagoon.
Goodbye, Don Glees! is also the first original feature film produced by Studio Madhouse. The plot of the movie centres on three childhood friends named Roma, Toto, and Drop who, throughout the course of one calamitous summer, is falsely accused of being responsible for lighting a fire in the woods. The three individuals decide to embark on a mission to find a drone that has gone missing and may have footage that might validate their claims of innocence.
The following is an excerpt from the movie’s official plot synopsis: “Teenage outcasts Roma, Toto, and Drop call themselves the “Don Glees,” an informal moniker for their excursions in their backyard. When the three friends hear that they are being accused of a fire in the neighbouring woods, they decide to go investigate on their own to clear their names. As a result of the unfortunate events that befell their journey, the friends soon find themselves at odds with one another as they come to terms with the fact that growing up has led each of them down a very different route in life.
The coming-of-age picture was announced for the first time in July 2021, and it was made available to the public in Japan in February of this year. Goodbye, Don Glees! Features notable Japanese voice actors including Yuuki Kaji as Toto (Eren Jaeger in Attack on Titan), Natsuki Hanae as Roma (Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer), Ayumu Murase as Drop (Shoyo Hinata in Haikyu!!), and Kana Hanazawa as Chibori Urayasu (Mayuri Shiina in Steins; Gate). This coming Friday, the film will have its debut in North America for the first time at Anime Expo in Los Angeles. The first day of the Anime Expo was on Friday, and the convention will run until Monday, July 4.
Character design was handled by Takahiro Yoshimatsu, Ayano Okamoto was in charge of art direction, Jin Aketagawa was in charge of sound direction, Yki Kawashita was in charge of directing photography, and Yoshiaki Fujisawa was in charge of composing the score. Yoshiaki Fujisawa was also in charge of composing the score. The movie has been rated PG and has a total running duration of 95 minutes. The events for the fan previews of Goodbye, Don Glees! will take place in cinemas all around the country on Wednesday, September 14, in the original Japanese version, and on Thursday, September 15, in the English dub version. After these one-of-a-kind happenings, the film will have a limited distribution in theatres beginning the following Friday, September 16.
