The squad agreed to conduct an investigation before passing judgement on Kyoho in order to ensure everyone’s safety and identify the assassin of Captain Taiki. He speculated with Iwabe and Boruto that it may be a member of the Funato family snuck into a trap and evaded capture. When they pretended to kill Kyoho, they were merely waiting for whoever went to the body to grab the sword, but he had no idea that everyone was looking for him.
In an attempt to protect his knowledge of the Funato family, he tried to blow up the engine and sacrifice himself when he was trapped. These events led to their becoming lost at sea.
