Quordle, a new and substantially more difficult variant of Wordle, has lately appeared on the web. Quordle is one of many Wordle spin-offs that have recently gained popularity, including Spellie, a variant of Wordle designed for younger players, and Worldle, a game that applies the amorphous principles of Wordle to tests of geographic knowledge. Josh Wardle, an indie developer, launched Wordle in the fall of 2013. Since then, its popularity has exploded, with a slew of A-listers, singers, and sports openly declaring their love for the game.
The New York Times’ subsequent purchase of the book looks to have made it even more popular. There are six days a week in which a new five-letter word is generated and players have six chances to guess what it is. Each guess changes the colour of the letters in the word from grey to yellow to green depending on where they appear in the word. Green letters are always found in the same place as their yellow or grey counterparts. Quordle is here to give a bigger challenge for anyone who thinks this sounds a little too simple.
Like Wordle, Quordle gives players many chances to identify a five-letter word, with each letter being highlighted in one of three colours: grey, yellow, or green. Because there are four independent mystery words instead of just one, Wordle enthusiasts must work toward totally diverse answers at the same time in order to solve the puzzle. Many gamers will find Quordle’s level of difficulty nearly insurmountable. When it comes to word puzzles, Wordle might be challenging enough on its own, but Quordle takes the challenge to a whole new level.
As a result, it is doubtful that Quordle will achieve the same degree of popularity as the game that inspired it. It’s amazing how many Wordle-based games have sprung up in the last few weeks and months. The early success of a game like Wordle is nearly unheard of outside of viral blockbusters like Flappy Bird or 2048, yet Wordle could be more popular than those games still. Many creative Wordle spin-offs are expected to come in the future, so don’t expect them to be the last.
