Naughty Dog Co-President Neil Druckmann recently said that the company behind The Last of Us and Uncharted is currently working on at least three projects. It has only been known that the Santa Monica-based team is hard at work on The Last of Us 2’s Factions multiplayer suite since launching in June 2020. Tom Henderson, a well-known Battlefield leaker, reports that Sony and Naughty Dog are planning to release a separate online game this year. Sony has yet to make a public statement on the long-rumoured Last of Us remake, which Henderson claims will be released in late 2022.
This second TLoU re-release came to light in April 2021, when news about an internal shake-up at SIE revealed that the not-so-secret San Diego crew had previously supervised the remake project. The undisclosed project has reportedly been taken over by Naughty Dog’s development team. Naughty Dog announced yesterday, February 3, that company is presently recruiting in a variety of fields. It didn’t take long for Studio Co-President Neil Druckmann to join the conversation (via The Gamer) and invite potential game developers to submit their applications while also hinting that three different titles are in the works.
The Last of Us Factions might be considered one project. In the meanwhile, the aforementioned speculations imply a complete remake of the franchise’s debut chapter serves as a further alternative as well. It’s unclear what Naughty Dog’s upcoming mystery game will involve. The following tweet from Druckmann contains a clue to his enigmatic social media post. There’s no way of knowing what more the studio has in store for us now that two Last of Us-related games are set for release in 2022.
Of course, another Uncharted game from Naughty Dog isn’t out of the question, especially given the studio has indicated an interest in perhaps returning to the treasure-hunting adventure series. Considering Druckmann and Part II’s Narrative Lead Halley Gross prepared a concept for a third entry that had not yet begun development in early 2021, it’s possible that The Last of Us Part III is also on the table. There is a lot of anticipation that the award-winning team would look into new IP as soon as possible. The Last of Us and Uncharted are only two of the seven titles that Naughty Dog has released since 2007. Upon the release of Factions and the rumoured Last of Us remake, it appears a change of scenery will be in order.
