Modern Warfare dev teases Call of Duty: 2022 reveal

A recent hint suggests that Call of Duty 2022 will be released shortly and that it will have significant ramifications for the series as a whole. Call of Duty 2022 is expected to be a follow-up to Modern Warfare, which was released in 2019. The final game in the series hinted at a sequel featuring even more well-known characters, but Infinity Ward has been mum on the subject thus far on any details.

If Ghost, Soap McTavish, and General Shepherd return in the relaunched Modern Warfare, it’s not yet known how much of a role they will have in the new game, which is due out in 2018. In 2021, rumours began to circulate that Call of Duty 2022 will be Modern Warfare 2. Officials from the show’s production team have confirmed that the show would move away from World War 3-level events and focus on more contemporary, more realistic themes.

In Call of Duty 2022, Task Force 141 is said to take on the Colombian drug gang and draw heavily from gritty flicks like Sicario. Intense gunfights and the protagonist’s trembling palms will likely be part of the campaign’s darker tone and more immersive elements. Activision revealed during an earnings call that Infinity Ward will produce Call of Duty 2022, and the developer teased the upcoming title on Twitter.

The well-known developer hinted at an upcoming “new generation” of Call of Duty but provided no additional information. Call of Duty 2022 is slated to be released in October of this year, but this tweet may indicate that the game’s release date is closer than previously thought. First time since Infinity Ward’s last game that a Call of Duty developer has had a complete three-year development cycle. There were turbulent developments on both Treyarch and Sledgehammer’s games in the two years leading up to 2019 when Sledgehammer’s 2020 title was cancelled and turned over to Treyarch.

So, Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard felt a little hurried and disorganised when compared to other games in the series. It’s possible that Call of Duty 2022 will be a welcome return to form for the franchise. It’s possible that Call of Duty 2022 will be the last game in the series to be released annually. Following Microsoft’s takeover of Activision, there have been rumours that Call of Duty may discontinue its yearly releases. It’s possible that the Call of Duty series may slow down and rethink its release schedule to make room for better games and lessen fan fatigue now that Activision won’t be forced to release one every year to stay afloat with Microsoft’s safety net.
