In contrast to the increasingly popular choice of Vice City for the next Grand Theft Auto game, one Redditor has proposed Liberty City. GTA 3 and GTA 4 were both set in the New York-inspired metropolis, which was also the backdrop for a few previous games in the franchise. Many imaginary and parodic American cities have been featured in Grand Theft Auto games over the years. GTA 5 introduced players to San Andreas, which is based on the state of California and features Los Santos, an obvious parody of real-world Los Angeles.
GTA Vice City, on the other hand, was set in Rockstar’s version of Miami, the namesake oceanside city of Vice City. It’s been theorised that the next GTA game, which has yet to be released, could revisit and modernise Vice City’s locations as GTA 5 did with San Andreas. Absentia123, a Reddit user, has suggested Liberty City as a possible location for GTA 6’s next urban playground. Vice City is currently the most sought-after setting, however, absentia123 believes that its tropical environment and drug culture make it more similar to Los Santos and so less exciting to rediscover.
A list of reasons for why Liberty City is a better option, such as its cultural diversity, seasonal changes and dense population, is then presented. If this user is correct, Vice City is a fan-favourite GTA setting, however, it is true that the colourful, sunny but shallow cultural backdrop featured prominently in GTA 5, so a different sort of city would be a refreshing change.
There is no doubt that GTA 4’s return to Liberty City with improved visuals and more areas to explore will be an exciting prospect for many players, especially considering how out of date it looks and how little robust and interactive the game is compared to other recent open-world games. Rockstar has yet to reveal where or when the next Grand Theft Auto game will take place, which is understandable.
It’s possible that the next film in the series will choose to lampoon a different US city, such as Chicago or Detroit, or an international one, such as London or Amsterdam. And given the diverse and wide map in RDR2, it’s conceivable that the devs won’t be sticking to a single city. No matter how it turns out, fans of Grand Theft Auto will be eagerly awaiting the next instalment for some time to come, and talk about the game’s setting is unlikely to abate any time soon.
