As far as we can tell, EA and DICE will not be releasing any more Star Wars: Battlefront titles in the foreseeable future. As a substitute, they’ll put their energy into helping promote Battlefield 2042. Three new Star Wars games are presently being developed by Respawn Entertainment, one of which is the sequel to 2019’s hit single-player action title, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. 2015’s Star Wars: Battlefront was the first game EA developed under its exclusive partnership with Disney to produce video games based on the Star Wars franchise.
It was met with a negative reception due to a lack of content and an overreliance on DLC, which was not well received. While Battlefront II’s microtransactions were a hot topic in 2017, they were also the subject of a government probe concerning perceived gambling in video games. By the time EA stopped supporting Battlefront II in 2020, DICE had significantly reduced the presence of these problematic components in the following upgrades.
Video game journalist Tom Henderson said in November that EA had scrapped a new Star Wars Battlefront game due to licencing costs because of the high expense of development. According to VentureBeat, EA will not be publishing Star Wars Battlefront III as part of their upcoming slate of Star Wars titles. This appears to be confirmation of Henderson’s allegation. sources who spoke to VG 24/7 said that DICE will instead focus on improving November’s Battlefield 2024, which was lambasted since it included less content than previous Battlefield titles. EA’s Star Wars Battlefront doesn’t appear to be getting a new entry for the time being.
Recently, claims have surfaced that DICE originally planned to include Ahsoka Tano and Assaj Ventress as playable characters in Battlefront II, as well as a battlefield, modelled on Mustafar from Revenge Of The Sith. Although data mining confirmed that these characters were referenced alongside Padme Amidala in the Battlefront II source code, they were not included in the game. Even in Star Wars Battlefront III, it doesn’t appear that these characters will be making an appearance any time soon. Even if EA and DICE could return to the Star Wars: Battlefront series at a later point when today’s wave of new Star Wars titles have been released, it appears that DICE is currently focused solely on Battlefield. Meanwhile, there are other new Star Wars games out there, like Aspyr’s recreation of Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic and Ubisoft’s still-unnamed open-world game in the galaxy far, far away.
