Xbox Live customers will be able to play Battlefield 2042 for free this weekend. The latest shooter from DICE was released in November and has already experienced substantial reductions. Following a bumpy launch packed with problems and inadequate content, Battlefield 2042 received a bad review from both fans and critics. DICE has already released a number of fixes for the game, and more are on the way, as well as new seasonal content.
It was recently claimed that Battlefield 5 had more players during Christmas than Battlefield 2042, despite the fact that the previous game was published some years ago and received a bad review at launch. Many people have criticised the game for falling short of the standards set by some of the finest Battlefield titles, such as 3 and 4. Despite being promoted as a return to the series’ current age, it failed to satisfy and left many fans wanting more from DICE. DICE, on the other hand, isn’t given up.
For those who haven’t yet played Battlefield 2042, Xbox will be providing it as one of its “Free Play Days” titles from January 6 to January 9. Because this is simply a trial, users will be unable to continue playing the game beyond this weekend unless they purchase it. During this period, the complete game will be available, therefore there will be no restrictions on the free trial. The game is also about $20 off on both the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X, so those who appreciate it may get it at a discount. The first season of Battlefield 2042 is still months away, meaning gamers will have to wait a little longer for fresh content.
It’s unclear whether this reflects decreased sales for what was slated to be EA’s biggest product of 2021, or whether it’s simply a post-holiday push. Call of Duty: Vanguard also had a free multiplayer trial available shortly after its debut, prompting some to conclude the game isn’t selling well. Because concrete sales figures aren’t often published outside of investor calls unless a game has a phenomenal result, it’s probable that none of these titles performed well.
Battlefield 2042 is said to have sold well upon its first release, but it’s unclear if those purchases have converted to long-term player numbers. Because December only featured a few notable releases, the December 2021 NPD sales statistics should provide insight into how the game fared throughout the holidays. If Battlefield 2042’s future improvements fail to re-engage players, the franchise as a whole may suffer. Although some fans have returned to Battlefield 5, it was too little, too late. Battlefield 2042, hopefully, will not face the same fate.
