For the first time, a survival game based on Shadow of the Colossus has been released for PlayStation and Xbox. With a Steam early access beta due in January 2019, the grandiose boss-climbing adventure began development in 2014. Many gamers have likened Praey for the Gods to Team ICO’s Shadow of the Colossus because of its enigmatic icy landscape and massive bosses to defeat.
No Matter Studios certainly drew a lot of inspiration from the popular 2005 game Shadow of the Colossus when making Praey for the Gods. Wander, a young man who trespasses into a forbidden region in an attempt to resuscitate a young woman named Mono is the protagonist of the PlayStation exclusive. For this seemingly insurmountable mission, the player must identify, scale, and ultimately defeat sixteen giant colossi in an innovative mix of combat and puzzle-solving techniques. With SOTC’s unique climbing gameplay and nuanced world-building, many considered the title an interactive piece of art when it was first released. This year, Bluepoint Games rebuilt Shadow of the Colossus, preserving the game’s gameplay but also remaking all of its assets with modern technology.
In celebration of Praey for the Gods’ console release, developer No Matter Studios has taken to Twitter. The game’s Steam early access launched in 2019. Praey for the Gods’ gameplay is heavily influenced by Shadow of the Colossus, yet the survival and crafting aspects let it stand out from its predecessor. Players take on the role of an enigmatic explorer tasked with tracking down, climbing, and killing a variety of enormous monsters in a harsh frozen landscape. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild-like non-linearity allows players to explore the environment at their own pace and defeat bosses in any order they desire.
It’s possible that the original game’s director is working on a new project at the same time that No Matter Studios appears to be making a worthy sequel to Shadow. In January 2021, Fumito Ueda, the creator of ICO and The Last Guardian, hinted at a new game. As a video game creator, he is recognized for creating beautiful fantasy worlds where much of the backstory and even the game’s story is left up to the player. This fascinating new game is said to be being developed by Ueda’s GenDesign team, but no details have been released in nearly a year.
With Praey for the Gods, developer No Matter Studios has developed an entirely new experience by combining the incredible boss fights of Shadow Of The Colossus with the huge open environment of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Many mysteries await players in the game’s icy landscape, while combat with divine giants is sure to test their resolve. Pray for the Gods can finally soar to new heights with the console release of the game.
