Sega recently revealed some new facts regarding Sonic Frontiers’ plot, including the fact that it will be written by Ian Flynn, a seasoned comic book writer. Flynn’s work on Archie’s long-running line of Sonic The Hedgehog comics, which featured an alternate take on the character that became almost as popular and charming as the Sonic games they were based on, may be familiar to fans of Sega’s Blue Blur. Even after Archie broke ways with Sonic and his colorful supporting cast in 2016, Flynn was chosen as the lead writer for IDW’s relaunched Sonic The Hedgehog series.
Meanwhile, during last week’s Game Awards 2021 Livestream showcase, Sega officially revealed the newest Sonic The Hedgehog game, showing the fast-paced mascot rushing through an open world that quickly drew comparisons to The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Kirby And The Forgotten Land. Sonic zoomed over ancient jungle ruins, driven by a mystery voice and flaunting what looked to be some bizarre new speed powers, in the Sonic Frontiers clip, which also hinted at enormous enemies and had an especially frightening vibe.
Sega has stated that Ian Flynn is working on a unique tale for Sonic Frontiers, according to Nintendo Everything. Dr. Eggman, Sonic’s ever-present arch-nemesis, has unearthed an ancient technology in the mysterious Starfall Islands, according to more narrative facts. Sonic will find himself in a race against time to save the world and explore the secrets of Starfall Islands when the mad doctor sends his AI program SAGE to hack into this technology.
Sega had promised a new Sonic game since May when it published a mysterious teaser clip for “Sonic Rangers,” which was then thought to be the title. Although Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team, later admitted that the announcement came too soon, he has hinted that the next game will be a reworking of Sonic’s fast-paced platforming gameplay. After the mixed reception to 2017’s Sonic Forces and the glitch-filled launch of Sonic Colors Ultimate earlier this year, his team is believed to be spending extra time to ensure that Sonic Frontiers meets up to fans’ expectations.
Ian Flynn has been penning Sonic The Hedgehog stories since 2006, so his collaboration with Sonic Frontiers will come as a welcome surprise to fans of Blue Blur’s animated escapades. Between Sonic Frontiers’ long-awaited release and Sonic’s return to the big screen in April’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2, 2022 seems to be a bright year for The Fastest Thing Alive.
