He was the old man from Shimotsuki Village who he remembered from his childhood. Zoro had a flashback to 13 years ago when Shimotsuki disclosed the existence of Enma; Enma picks the wielder, and the wielder will never be able to choose Enma on his own.
This is when Zoro successfully completed the test, activated his conquerer Haki-Hoshoku Haki, and unleashed it using his swords. Now that it appears that Enma has embraced Zoro and his wielding abilities, it is possible that Zoro may receive a significant Haki upgrade in One Piece Chapter 1034.
