Hunter x Hunter is a manga series that, unfortunately, will never be serialised again on a regular basis, at least not according to the current work schedule of its author, Yoshihiro Togashi. In truth, the master has always completed all of the work himself, from the writing of the storey to the creation of the drawings, and has never had the assistance of an assistant.
A previous interview, conducted in 2017, indicated that Togashi was aware of the concerns of fans who wished to see him move away from the artwork and concentrate solely on the storyline. Even if there hasn’t been a new Hunter x Hunter chapter in more than 800 days, the master is still faced with the difficult issue of whether to continue working on the manga alone or whether to enlist the assistance of a third party, at the very least in terms of the illustrations.
However, even though the last chapter of HunterxHunter is still a long way off, Yoshihiro Togashi, thanks to an ad hoc contract with Shueisha, still feels free to work as he sees fit: “They let me do what I want. It’s possible that the series I’m currently working on is a significant problem from a different point of view than mine, but I’m really enjoying it myself. […] Generally speaking, I believe there are two categories of readers: those who aren’t concerned with whether or not I draw my stories and those who want to read a manga written and illustrated entirely by me. I’m still stumped as to how to strike a balance between this issue and the needs of the bulk of my readers. In general, I believe it is acceptable to delegate the creation of images to a third party.”
In 2016, the sensei collaborated with Hachi Mizuno on the script for AKUTEN WARS, which was released in 2017. And you, on the other hand, what kind of readers do you consider yourself to be in comparison to the other two? Please let us know by leaving a comment below.
