Fushigi Yûgi is set to return from a four-year break in November 2022 with a brand-new one-shot in Shogakukan’s Monthly Flowers. According to Natalie, the one-shot – which will appear in Monthly Flowers’ Sept. 28, 2022 edition – will continue and conclude the “Four Gods” tale.
Yuu Watase wrote and illustrated Fushigi Yûgi, a shojo manga. The manga began publishing in 1992 and continued until 1996 in Shogakukan’s Sho-Comi magazine. It spawned numerous spinoffs, including Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden, which ran from 2003 to 2013; Fushigi Yûgi: Byakko Ibun, a 51-page one-shot released in February 2015; and Fushigi Yûgi: Byakko Senki, which debuted in August 2017. All of these spinoffs were published in Monthly Flowers and by Viz Media in North America in English. Fushigi Yûgi has also inspired a number of adaptations, including a 52-episode animation produced by Studio Pierrot between 1995 and 1996, a 12-episode anime made by Studio Satelight in 2013, three OVAs, and various stage plays and stage musicals. Fushigi Yûgi: Byakko Senki was put on hold in August 2018 due to Watase’s health and has remained so since.
Fushigi Yûgi features two middle school girls, Miaka Yuki and Yui Hongo, who are transported to ancient China after discovering a mystery book in the library titled “The Universe of the Four Gods.” The two find themselves as priestesses in two opposing nations and are compelled to shoulder the obligations that accompany their new positions.
The return of Fushigi Yûgi was announced in the January 2022 edition, which was released on Nov. 27. It is one among several plans to mark Shogakukan’s Monthly Flowers’ 20th anniversary. Additionally, a special edition of Torikae Baya will be released, as will a new series titled Poe no Ichizoku by Moto Hagio, a new series from Akiko Hatsu, and new one-shots from Nemu Yoko and Keiko Nishi. To mark the milestone, a panel featuring Nao Iwamoto, Chiho Saito, Tamura, Akiko Hatsu, and several other mangakas will be placed on July 16-17, 2022.
The upcoming Fushigi Yûgi one-shot will be the manga’s first new instalment since 2018. Monthly Flowers will publish the one-shot in late 2022.
