Many fans are looking forward to seeing what the cast of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series will look like once they are dressed in their costumes. One actor, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who has been cast in the role of Uncle Iroh, will only need to make minimal adjustments to his performance. The Kim’s Convenience star already has a full beard and would only require a trim. Despite this, Lee was said to have cried when he saw himself transformed into Prince Zuko’s beloved uncle!
It was announced earlier this month that Avatar: The Last Airbender has begun production and that Paul Hyung-Sun Lee has been cast in the role of Uncle Iroh in the film. People were ecstatic at the casting, which was unsurprising given that the Mandalorian actor appeared and sounded like a perfect match for the character. The makeup crew for the Netflix series, on the other hand, had to make a few tiny adjustments to Lee’s facial hair.
Uncle Iroh didn’t have a full moustache in the original animated series, so Lee had to shave off that portion of his beard to make room for it. In order to achieve Iroh’s mutton chops, Lee would also need to grow some additional hair on his sideburns. Nonetheless, these are simply modest modifications to Lee’s overall appearance.
Surprisingly, the makeup department also revealed that Lee was overjoyed with the results of his metamorphosis. It has been stated that Lee sobbed when he saw the “whole look.”
We’re delighted by this response, especially given that Lee had been overjoyed at the prospect of playing Uncle Iroh. Needless to say, we are looking forward to seeing him in the role of everyone’s favourite uncle when the Netflix series premieres.
Along with Gordon Cormier as Aang, Ian Ousley as Sokka, iawentiio as Katara, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Lim Kay Siu as Gyatso and Ken Leung as Commander Zhao will appear in Avatar: The Last Airbender. An official release date for the series has not yet been established.
