Dragon Ball Super’s storyline takes place directly after Dragon Ball Z, but so does Dragon Ball GT’s storyline. Expanding the Dragon Ball Universe has made the storylines of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z a little confused. Dragon Ball Super is the newest chapter in the ever-expanding Dragon Ball mythos, which begins just after the conclusion of Dragon Ball Z. As a side note, the preceding series, Dragon Ball GT, began after Dragon Ball Z.
Is Dragon Ball Super erasing GT from the timeline because of this?
As soon as the first episode of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball Super airs, fans are made aware of the series’ chronological order, which is directly after that of Dragon Ball Z. Not only was Dragon Ball GT not written by Akira Toriyama, but it was not based on any manga. In addition to the events of Dragon Ball Z, GT has a hard reset of the characters’ stories, one of which returns Goku to his childhood.
Does Dragon Ball Super remove GT from continuity? The short answer is yes, for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, the series does not feature any involvement from Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. Despite the fact that a Dragon Ball product bearing Toriyama’s name does not always imply that the narrative is canon, the creator does have the last word on what is canon. There is also a discrepancy in the characters’ power levels, which varies greatly between GT and Super.
There is a major difference between GT and Super when it comes to Goku and Vegeta’s ability to transform into Super Saiyans. When Goku and Vegeta achieve the level of Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball GT, they lose their golden hair and return to their more primitive appearance, complete with long, dark fur and tails that give them a frightening aura.
In Dragon Ball Super, there is no such level, since Goku first goes from Super Saiyan 3 to Super Saiyan God, then finally to Super Saiyan Blue with Super Saiyan 4 completely out of the picture. In light of Dragon Ball Super’s differences and Akira Toriyama’s absence from GT, it is impossible for the two storylines to exist in the same universe, so GT is the outlier. Dragon Ball Super may appear to have deleted GT from continuity, but this does not mean GT is any less credible as a Dragon Ball narrative.
Super Saiyan 4 is unquestionably one of the best characters from Dragon Ball Z, both in terms of power and design.
Dragon Ball Super removes Dragon Ball GT from continuity, yet it doesn’t remove the fun GT offers to Dragon Ball fans worldwide.
